F*** a duck

April 21, 2008

I have commented before about how dreadful I think the Independent newspaper is and its low church we’re all going to hell in a handcart headlines. Now I know it has been a slow weekend. Not a lot on bar the papal visit, one of the most interesting democratic nomination races of recent times, the B of E bailout of the banking system and (hopefully) the property market, naughty Prince WiIliam landing his helicopter at the girlfriends house, Zimbabwe in continued meltdown, rising food prices, etc etc.  With this paucity of anything newsworthy is it surprising the Independent kicks off with “The Great Migration Crisis?” and byline - ”Many of the birds that migrate to Britain and Europe from Africa every spring, from the willow warbler to the cuckoo, are undergoing alarming declines, new research shows.”

I’m not saying this is not news. While personally, I have always found the willow warbler to be a little unreliable, I am just not convinced it is news opening of the week material. Apparently there is an international high level meeting of ornithlogists to discuss this imminently. I reckon we should have a supplement on that or maybe even an evening extra – something for the urchins to peddle now times are lean.
